In the beak midwinter...

Updated: Dec 6, 2023

We are fast approaching the shortest day of the year and dark mornings and dark afternoons are tough especially when we’re working full time and struggle to get outside during daylight. Seasonal affective disorder can negatively impact mood. We might feel tired, comfort eat and find solace in some unhealthy habits (ahem…alcohol). Christmas might be a mixed blessing for some people and can add to anxiety and stress.

There are some positives to immersing oneself into the bleak midwinter. Follow the lead from the Danes and embrace Hygge: be cosy, comfortable, find contentment. Snuggle in blankets, light candles, bestow your house with fairy lights. Winter is a great time for reading, films, grabbing the chance to get outside and feel the chill on your cheeks and the glow when you get back inside.

I think yoga is a blissful ingredient to enhance a hygge feeling. Restorative yoga is perfect for grounding, resting and finding a sense of peace and ease. Using props like a bolster or a firm pillow and blankets, restorative yoga allows you to really let go. Moving slowly with your breath and holding poses for 5 to 10 breaths is indulgent and a treat. Hide yourself away, light some candles, switch on some fairy lights and let the yoga work some magic.

Keep an eye out for a recorded restorative sequence I’ll record and drop into your inboxes as a special midwinter treat. If you know someone else who might like the flow, suggest they look at my website and sign up to it.

Happy Hygge!
